Marthe Mottet

Artist Marthe Mottet from Rouen developed a passion for painting very young. Following her studies at the Fine Arts School of Rouen, her artistic ambitions, which she acquired from Blaise Patrix and Viviane Faivre Vella, have only grown over the years. In 1995, she definitely devoted herself to painting and has exhibited regularly since. Mixed techniques, oils, watercolours, pastels and inks hold no more secrets for her. After a figurative period, she launched on the path of abstraction in 2003, something that she considered as vital in order to eliminate the unnecessary and reach the quintessence of life.
What first strikes the observer in Marthe Mottet’s artwork is the brightness of her vibrant colour palette, which draws us into an ethereal world of dissolving shapes. Each carefully studied composition offers a new dreamlike vision. Her able brushstroke, which is often considered impressionistic, procures a sensation of transparency and opacity all at once. Marthe Mottet describes herself as a “colourist”, and it is indeed the colouring that confers her works meaning, playing as it does upon oppositions and contrasts and thereby creating very fine light effects. The resulting abstraction cannot, however, be qualified as informal, because it always evokes nature and at times traces of figures. Vast landscapes, infinite skies, and airy and flowing spaces extend far beyond our perceptions, in a conceptual world full of colour and light.
With great poetic sensitivity, Marthe Mottet reveals to us, in fecund creations, the essence of a macrocosm in which a perfect harmony of transcendent shapes and exalted colours might reign. It is a symphony in which the power of the imagination prevails...

Born in Rouen, Marthe MOTTET was very fortunate to meet in the local Art School (Beaux-Arts of Rouen) renowned painters such as Blaise PATRIX and Viviane FAIVRE-VELLA who gave her invaluable advice and consequently helped her develop her artistic talent and find her own signature, both realistic and abstract.
Indeed, exhibit after exhibit her talent has asserted itself, from “Gourmandine” in 1995 when she was still in her artistic infancy to the heights of Daniel AMOURETTE’s exhibits today.
Hence her painting displays a very diaphanous palette whose colours nevertheless manifest the depth of their essence and are spread over vertical constructions where exquisite figures appear, revealing the artist’s thoughts and desires with extremely fluid motifs and whispering nuances bathing in shimmering light.
Marthe MOTTET has the rare ability to immediately attract and captivate the visitor through the warm symbolic of her art, which intertwines exalting effects with the subdued poetry of the moment. Her work exudes a fascinating harmony and inexorably forces the viewer’s respect. She definitely deserves the recognition her work has commanded.

BIENNALE EN HAUTE-NORMANDIE ART CONTEMPORAIN
SERVAVILLE-SALMONVILLE 2006

Self-taught (free spirit, as she says) and from Rouen, Marthe Mottet, has explored adventurous territories; acrylic, ink, collage, superposing surfaces but at the same time (and space) leaving small openings which lets us glimpse another play, another air, another proposition, a new way of seeing and so on.
Could this be palimpseste ?
We can simple say that a world of art is hiding another. Fortunately, it's more complicated than that:
Pleasure can't be explained.

Marthe Mottet's work is an invitation to meditation. In each of her productions she introduces a world in which human shapes appear together. Sometimes you can see them clearly, sometimes they are hiding in the texture, paper, paint, pigments.
Bodies melt into an ambiguous background. The spectator's eye is caught by certain elements that seem to evaporate, to disappear. In between absence and presence, Marthe Mottet offers a new world, both perceptible and imperceptible like a secret.
Transparency is always there as if its role was to reveal several layers.
The perception of the spectator is guided towards an unknown area which reveals itself.
